Goodhue Wrestlers Earn Academic All-State Honors

Three Goodhue Wrestlers were named to The Guillotine 2012 Academic All-State Teams. Junior wrestler Kyle Drehmel earned a spot on the Third Team, and 2012 state entrants Mitchell Breuer and Weston Gadient earned Honorable Mention. Congratulations to these fine wrestlers and students!

Updated - Freestyle Practice Schedule for 2012

Due to some conflicts that came up with Gyms due to Gym #2 being re-surfaced for 3 weeks this spring, here is an updated freestyle schedule. Note that some dates are gone, and that some times have changed. There is a PDF paper handout version on the school website under "wrestling" and "freestyle" if you wish to have a copy to print out.

Also, all K-12 wrestlers are welcome to attend these practices with Coach Huneke. Much of the practice technique overlap with folkstyle technique.

Goodhue Elementary Program Places at NYWA State Tournament

Goodhue's elementary team went 3-2 in duals at the NYWA State Tournament this weekend. It was a great capstone to a terrific season. On Saturday, the team went 2-1, losing only to a strong Albert Lea team. On Sunday, the team won its first dual, and in the second dual staged a dramatic comeback with some exciting pins and a forfeit to tie the team score. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as Goodhue technically lost the dual on criteria. Still, the team finished 10th place out of 32 teams - congratulations!

Goodhue also saw wrestlers with individual success. Ten Goodhue matmen qualified, and two ground their way through tough brackets to place. At 97#, Mariano Bigalk fought illness and some tough opponents to finish in 4th place, going 4-2 on the weekend. Fellow sixth grader Ryan Schoenfelder went 3-2 to finish in 5th place in his 120# bracket. Both faced and fell to the eventual bracket champion.

Goodhue Wrestling HS and Elementary Banquet Dates

The Goodhue Wrestling 7-12 Banquet will be held Thursday, April 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Goodhue HS Gym #1.

The Elementary Program will also be held in Gym #1, and will be held Sunday, April 15th at 5:00 p.m.

Elementary Program Successful at NYWA Tournaments

The Goodhue Wrestling Elementary Program is enjoying a strong a post-season in the NYWA league.

On March 17th, the Goodhue Elementary Wrestling Team placed 3rd  out of 14 teams to advance to the the state tournament at the Mayo Civic Center the weekend of 3/31/12.  They beat Faribault, GMLOK, Hayfield, and ZM. Their only loss of the day was to KM.  They will wrestle their first match at 3:30 on Saturday 3/31. Go Wildcats!!!

 This past weekend, 10 Goodhue wrestlers qualified for the NYWA State Tournament. The following is a list of the region place-winners who are going on to the state tournament:

Mental Aerobics Charity Tournament March 17, 2012

Four Goodhue Wrestlers will be competing at a charity wrestling tournament in Rochester on March 17th. Joel, Kyle, Matthew, and Jacob B will be wrestling in the Mental Aerobics tournament - wish them luck on St. Patrick's Day!

Jaycees Elementary Tournament Saturday

The Tim and Bryce Breuer Memorial Jaycees Tournament will be held Saturday, March 10th.

7-12 wrestlers can come at 9:00 a.m. to work tables and help referee matches.

Weston Gadient places 6th at 2012 State Tournament!

Weston Gadient, senior at 220 pounds, placed 6th at the 2012 State Tournament. Congratulations!

Also, Mitchell Breuer was a state qualifier at 152 pounds. Thanks for representing Goodhue wrestling!

MN State Wrestling Tourney 2012 Update

Mitchell Breuer and Weston Gadient each wrestled 4 matches Friday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

At 152, Mitchell Breuer lost a 10-1 major decision to eventual semi-finalist to Mitchell Rohlik of Wabasso/Red Rock Central. In his wrestleback late Friday, Mitchell lost a 5-0 decision and dropped out of the tournament. Congratulations to Mitchell on a great season and his first state tournament appearance.

At 220, senior Weston Gadient notched a first round pin against Barnesville's Kyle Johnson in :50 seconds. In the evening quarterfinals, Weston kept fans and coaches on the edge of their seats. The first period saw no takedowns, and they traded escapes in final two periods. The first overtime went without a takedown, sending the match into double overtime. Barnesville chose down in the first double over-time. Despite numerous attempts, Weston was able to ride him out for the :30 seconds. Weston then went down and with the clock running down, got his second escape of the match and the win.

Weston wrestles Saturday in the State Semi-Finals at 11:15 a.m.

Goodhue Wrestling Team Trip to state

The Land of Lakes Wrestling Club is sponsoring a trip to take 6-12 grade wrestlers up to the state tournament to watch the team finals Thursday evening and then watch the Goodhue individual state qualifiers wrestle Friday morning. The bus will be leaving after school on Thursday.

If you haven't received information from your wrestler on this event, or have not received information via email, please contact Coach Grant.

There will be a pepfest to send off state-bound Goodhue wrestlers Weston Gadient and Mitchell Breuer Wednesday (2/29) at 3:00 p.m. in Gym #2.

Great video/story on sportsmanship from Montana

Here is a link to a great video on sportsmanship out of the Montana wrestling scene. Chad Otterness passed this link on to me; the wrestler that wanted to do the exhibition match is from the school he's now a principal at (Cascade, MT). It's worth the few minutes to see the impact wrestling can have on individuals and a community, and how wrestling contributes to life's greater lessons and joys.

Team Section Seeding 2012

Goodhue has earned a #6 seed in the Section 1A bracket for 2012. We will wrestle #11 seed Dover-Eyota in the first round. The winner advances to wrestle #3 seed Wabasha-Kellogg, who is the host school.

Kyle Drehmel earned 100th win, picks up 2nd OW Award

Kyle Drehmel notched his 100th career win in his first match of the day at the Robbinsdale Cooper Duals on January 28th, 2012. To capstone this significant achievement, Kyle earned his second tournament Outstanding Wrestler Award this season.

Congratulations Kyle!

And make sure to come out to the Kenyon-Wanamingo dual on Thursday, Feb. 9 as we recognize Kyle for this outstanding milestone in front of the hometown fans.
