Goodhue Wrestlers Earn Academic All-State Honors

Three Goodhue Wrestlers were named to The Guillotine 2012 Academic All-State Teams. Junior wrestler Kyle Drehmel earned a spot on the Third Team, and 2012 state entrants Mitchell Breuer and Weston Gadient earned Honorable Mention. Congratulations to these fine wrestlers and students!

Updated - Freestyle Practice Schedule for 2012

Due to some conflicts that came up with Gyms due to Gym #2 being re-surfaced for 3 weeks this spring, here is an updated freestyle schedule. Note that some dates are gone, and that some times have changed. There is a PDF paper handout version on the school website under "wrestling" and "freestyle" if you wish to have a copy to print out.

Also, all K-12 wrestlers are welcome to attend these practices with Coach Huneke. Much of the practice technique overlap with folkstyle technique.

Goodhue Elementary Program Places at NYWA State Tournament

Goodhue's elementary team went 3-2 in duals at the NYWA State Tournament this weekend. It was a great capstone to a terrific season. On Saturday, the team went 2-1, losing only to a strong Albert Lea team. On Sunday, the team won its first dual, and in the second dual staged a dramatic comeback with some exciting pins and a forfeit to tie the team score. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as Goodhue technically lost the dual on criteria. Still, the team finished 10th place out of 32 teams - congratulations!

Goodhue also saw wrestlers with individual success. Ten Goodhue matmen qualified, and two ground their way through tough brackets to place. At 97#, Mariano Bigalk fought illness and some tough opponents to finish in 4th place, going 4-2 on the weekend. Fellow sixth grader Ryan Schoenfelder went 3-2 to finish in 5th place in his 120# bracket. Both faced and fell to the eventual bracket champion.

SESSION I Wrestling- Individuals 7:50 AM Opening Ceremonies and Presentation of Flags

8:00 AM 1st Round Kindergarten and 1st - 2nd graders
9:30 AM 1st Round 3rd - 4th graders
11:00 AM 1st Round 5th - 6th graders
12:30 PM 2nd Round Kindergarten and 1st - 2nd graders
1:30 PM 2nd Round 3rd - 4th graders
2:30 PM 2nd Round 5th - 6th graders

SESSION II Wrestling -Teams (teams will wrestle in both arena & auditorium; all wrestling done on full mats) 3:30 - 8:30 PM 1st Round of Team Competition (each team will wrestle 3 times)

SESSION III 10:00 AM Parade of Champions: All K-6 individuals (only individuals) who are in final round. 10:15 AM 3rd Round: Consolation Semi-Finals and Individual Championship Round
All age groups: Kindergarten, (1-2), (3-4), (5-6)
12:45 PM Parade of Champions for all teams in final round (The Parade for the teams wrestling in the Auditorium will be in the Auditorium; those wrestling in the Arena will have a Parade in the Arena).

1:00 - 5:00 PM Championship Rounds of Team Competition (Each team will wrestle 2 times on full mats).

Goodhue Wrestling HS and Elementary Banquet Dates

The Goodhue Wrestling 7-12 Banquet will be held Thursday, April 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Goodhue HS Gym #1.

The Elementary Program will also be held in Gym #1, and will be held Sunday, April 15th at 5:00 p.m.

Elementary Program Successful at NYWA Tournaments

The Goodhue Wrestling Elementary Program is enjoying a strong a post-season in the NYWA league.

On March 17th, the Goodhue Elementary Wrestling Team placed 3rd  out of 14 teams to advance to the the state tournament at the Mayo Civic Center the weekend of 3/31/12.  They beat Faribault, GMLOK, Hayfield, and ZM. Their only loss of the day was to KM.  They will wrestle their first match at 3:30 on Saturday 3/31. Go Wildcats!!!

 This past weekend, 10 Goodhue wrestlers qualified for the NYWA State Tournament. The following is a list of the region place-winners who are going on to the state tournament:

4th: Carter Danielson, Ryan Schoenfelder, Kaleb O'Reilly
3rd: Max Loos, Brady Bork, Kelby O'Reilly
2nd: Casey Ryan, Mason Huemann

Mental Aerobics Charity Tournament March 17, 2012

Four Goodhue Wrestlers will be competing at a charity wrestling tournament in Rochester on March 17th. Joel, Kyle, Matthew, and Jacob B will be wrestling in the Mental Aerobics tournament - wish them luck on St. Patrick's Day!
